Asus has released a new limited edition graphics card series inspired by the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series. Momomo us on Twitter discovered this brilliantly colored graphics card when it was available for pre-order at CoolPC in Taiwan.
TWD 63,990 (about $2,185) is the price of the new Asus ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3090 O24G Evangelion Edition. It costs the same as the white variant in stock at the same PC hardware outlet, and it costs TWD 2,000 (about $68) more than the standard black and grey accented triple fan Strix model.
As a limited edition, just 15 of these graphics cards will be available from this retailer. As a welcome extra, CoolPC is including a free ROG Herculx Graphics Card Stand with this EVA 01 graphics card, valued TWD 1,290 ($44).
Asus has yet to create a product page for the pre-order item discovered by CoolPC. Pre-orders will expire until the supply is depleted, or at 8 p.m. on May 7, which might be when this device becomes official and Asus uploads a product page with specifications and other information. The shipment date is set to be on or around May 16, which is also a possible launch date.
We can’t be sure about things like GPU and memory clocks without the official product page and specs. However, like with previous special editions of this GPU, such as the Gundam and White models, they should be the same as the black and grey models. As a result, it will have the GeForce RTX 3090 standard of 10,496 CUDA cores, with a likely OC mode of 1,890 MHz (Boost Clock), as well as 24GB of GDDR6X VRAM on a 384-bit interface operating at 19.5 Gbps. In addition, this card, like the type it is based on, has three 8-pin power ports.
Refocusing our attention on the product’s exterior, it has green stripes on a purple shroud. In addition to the ROG Strix theme, there is writing that reads EVA 01. The fans have three logos: the NERV logo (NERV is a group of EVA 01 mecha pilots), the EVA 01 logo, and the ROG logo.
The backplate shows an outline of the first non-prototype Evangelion massive mechanoid unit EVA 01. This crowded design also includes GeForce RTX lettering in Nvidia green, the Asus ROG logo in red (perhaps LED lighted), and a number of tiny words and logos.
Finally, a top-down image of the card, as if looking down on the motherboard where it would be mounted, reveals another large GeForce RTX logo and a long RGB LED light bar, similar to the original Strix model but with a slightly different design.
We’re not sure how many Asus ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3090 O24G Evangelion GPUs will be available in Taiwan or globally. Even with the additional ROG Herculx GPU support, the price premium in Taiwan isn’t too difficult to swallow. Whether or if the design appeals to you are likely to be tied to your interest in the giant mecha robot anime series. Those who are unfamiliar with the show are unlikely to be enticed by this purple and green merchandise.
With the far better supply of graphics cards available, and costs falling back to MSRP levels, we hope that this special edition does not meet the same fate as others. It’s a pity to see items that some could consider pieces of art as simply another GPU coexisting with others in the silicon hell of a crypto-mining farm.
